Preparing to become a parent is an exciting and transformative journey, but it can also feel thoroughly OVERWHELMING.

With so many things to consider before baby arrives, where do you even begin?

We understand the anticipation and worries that come with preparing for a baby. From setting up the nursery to ensuring you have all the essentials, getting ready for parenthood involves thoughtful planning. That’s why we’ve created this neat checklist to help you feel more confident and prepared for life as mum and dad!

1. Create a Safe and Comfortable Sleeping Space

  • The room where baby sleeps (which is the parents’ room for the first months) should be a cosy and safe environment. Ensure you have:
  • The crib: Choose one that meets safety standards, with a firm mattress and no loose bedding.
Room temperature: A baby’s room should be kept at a comfortable temperature (around 18-20°C) to prevent overheating.
  • Lighting: Soft, dimmable lighting is ideal for nighttime feedings and nappy changes.
  • Storage: You’ll need space for baby clothes, nappies, and essentials—consider drawers, baskets, or shelves for easy organisation.

2. Baby Gear Essentials

  • A newborn may be small, but they require a surprising amount of gear. Make sure you have:
  • A car seat: A must-have for safe transportation from day one. Choose a rear-facing model that meets current safety regulations and is easy to install.
  • A pram or pushchair: Consider your lifestyle—do you need a compact pushchair for city living or an all-terrain pram for outdoor adventures?
  • A baby carrier: A great option for keeping your hands free while keeping your baby close and comfortable.
  • A changing station: Whether it’s a dedicated table or just a portable mat, make sure you have a practical setup for nappy changes.

3. Feeding Essentials

Whether breastfeeding or formula feeding, being prepared makes things easier. Think about:

  • Bottles and sterilising equipment: Even if you plan to breastfeed, having bottles can be useful for expressed milk or formula.
  • Breast pump: A manual or electric pump can be helpful if you need to express milk for later use.
  • High chair: Once your baby starts solid foods (around six months), a comfortable, easy-to-clean high chair will be essential.
  • Bibs and muslins: Babies can be messy eaters, so stock up on these essentials to protect clothes and furniture.

4. Baby Clothes & Nappies

Your baby will go through multiple outfits and nappies each day. Prepare with:

  • Comfortable clothing: Opt for soft, breathable fabrics and simple designs—bodysuits, sleepsuits, and leggings are great basics.
  • Nappies: Whether you choose disposable or reusable cloth nappies, have a good supply ready before the baby arrives.
  • Wipes and nappy cream: Sensitive baby skin requires gentle wipes and a good nappy cream to prevent rashes.
  • Laundry essentials: A mild, baby-friendly detergent is necessary for washing baby clothes safely.

5. Health & Safety

A safe environment is key for your baby’s well-being. Consider:

  • First-aid kit: Stock up on essentials like a baby thermometer, saline drops, and a nasal aspirator.
  • Baby-proofing: Cover sharp corners, install safety locks on cupboards, and secure heavy furniture to the walls to prevent accidents.
  • Baby monitor: A monitor allows you to check on your baby while they sleep, providing extra peace of mind.
  • Emergency contacts: Have a list of important numbers, including your GP, midwife, and emergency services, easily accessible.

7. Prepare yourself

Amongst the excitement and anticipation, be sure to take time to:

  • Communicate with your partner: Discuss parenting roles, expectations, and how you’ll support each other.
  • Build a support network: Family, friends, and parenting groups can provide valuable guidance and encouragement.
  • Take care of yourself: Self-care is important—rest when you can, eat well, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed.

8. Pack Your Hospital Bag

As your due date approaches, have a hospital bag ready with:

  • Important documents and birth plan: Bring your ID, insurance details, hospital paperwork, and a printed birth plan (if you have one) to ensure medical staff are aware of your preferences.
